CONTEMPORARY DANCE
Contemporary dance: bring your own sensibility to movement
Find your starting point in contemporary dance between learning set shapes and expressing yourself in your own way. Whether you are moving for the first time or reviewing your individual practice, begin with your experience and goals.
Class & program enquiries ↗What would you like to explore in contemporary dance?
The class you need will depend on whether you want to learn a section of choreography, experience improvisation or prepare a solo piece. If you have a favourite performance or movement video, tell us what feeling draws you to it.
Even with experience in ballet or another dance style, contemporary dance may feel unfamiliar. Conversely, without any dance experience, you can start with everyday movements such as small changes in position, direction or speed. Sharing your interests in detail is the first step.
Feel how movement begins and connects, rather than making it large
The same arm movement can create a different impression depending on where it starts and how slowly it unfolds. Begin and stop within a small range, and notice how your gaze and breathing follow.
For floorwork or movements that lower the body, it is better to learn the conditions and methods in class than to copy them without guidance. Rather than holding an unfamiliar position for a long time, look for connections within a comfortable range and mention any uncomfortable movement straight away.
Expression practice also needs points for reflection
After practising, think about which movements felt comfortable and which moments in the music you responded to, rather than simply whether you did well. Even changing a short movement from slow to fast can help you compare different expressions.
If you are preparing your own piece, tell us the music, intended length, whether you plan to perform it and what support you need. We will discuss and check contemporary dance classes, instructor schedules and teaching formats at your preferred location—Jamsil–Songpa, Seocho or Seodaemun.
Check your preferred location and schedule
Tell us your preferred location—Jamsil–Songpa ART SPACE, Seocho ART CENTER or Seodaemun ART HALL—and available days and times. Class arrangements, instructor schedules and fees are provided after consultation.

There are various approaches, including learning set movements and exploring movement for yourself. When enquiring, check which formats are available for your goals.
Can I ask for help creating a short solo piece?
Tell us the music, expected length, performance schedule and how far you have progressed. We will identify the support needed, such as choreography coaching or movement practice, and check instructor schedules and availability.
