ARGENTINE TANGO & BALLROOM TANGO

Before beginning tango, find the style you want

Even under the same name, tango can involve different ways of hearing music and different movements. We distinguish Argentine tango from dancesport's ballroom tango and discuss a class direction suited to your interests and experience.

Which tango moved you?

First consider whether you are curious about social dancing with others or want to learn the defined movements of dancesport. If a scene from a video or performance caught your attention, you can send a link even if you do not know its exact name.

It is better to identify your preferred style before choosing, rather than grouping Argentine tango and ballroom tango into one class. If you have learned before, tell us the movements you know and your reason for taking part. Instructor schedules and availability are checked for each discipline.

Your first tango practice: make one step clear

At first, focus on walking and stopping while maintaining your own balance rather than crossing your feet in complex ways. A small stride and awareness of which foot you are standing on give you time to prepare for the next direction.

When moving together, explore your own balance and a comfortable connection rather than leaning on your partner or forcing direction with your arms. Recognising each other's starts and stops matters more than copying many fast movements.

Shoes, partners and what to check before booking

High heels are not a requirement for starting. First check which footwear suits the space and teaching format, and ask the instructor about the floor and heel requirements before buying specialist shoes. Also prepare clothing that lets you step and change direction comfortably.

Tell us whether you will attend alone or with someone, the style that interests you and your preferred times. Arrangements at Jamsil–Songpa, Seocho and Seodaemun must be checked individually. We will advise on available tango locations, formats and fees after consultation.

Check your preferred location and schedule

Tell us your preferred location—Jamsil–Songpa ART SPACE, Seocho ART CENTER or Seodaemun ART HALL—and available days and times. Class arrangements, instructor schedules and fees are provided after consultation.

Frequently asked questions for first-time enquiries

Should I choose Argentine tango or ballroom tango?

Begin by considering whether you want to enjoy social dance or learn a dancesport discipline. Sending a video or music you like can help identify your preferred style.

Can I take tango classes if I enquire on my own?

Tell us that you plan to attend alone and describe your experience. We will check possible arrangements for individual fundamentals and partner practice against current instructor schedules.

Do I need to wear heels from the beginning?

You do not need to buy shoes first. Ask whether the indoor shoes you would use to begin are suitable for the class space and movements. It is best not to push yourself into an unfamiliar heel height.
